Lego Solution??

I hope! I have somehow found myself in the midst of a Lego takeover! Anthony is a major Lego head and I think we have almost all of the Lego city sets. He enjoys them, but the pieces drive me CRAZY! Every where I turn I stumble upon Lego's. Big pieces, little pieces; really the size does NOT matter because even the wee tiniest pieces hurt like crazy when you step on them!

A few months ago I stumbled upon this amazing blog: I Heart Organizing, check it out if you are ready to be sucked in and stuck in front of your computer screen for hours bewildered by how a house with small children is SO organized and BEAUTIFUL at the same time! This blog has sparked a need for organization in my world of chaos! I have taken on quite a few projects and have A TON more in mind (which I will be soon sharing) all in thanks to I Heart Organizing...

Lately, I have been on mission organization and she has been talking Lego storage solutions. A friend alerted me that this months Family Fun magazine has an article on just that Lego Storage. Of course, being as I am in organizing mode, delved in and discovered what I hope to be the ANSWER to all my prayers (ok curses!)

I instantly got to work! I purchased 2 of the drawer storage (a 3 and 5 drawer one) bins, a pre cut (16x48) table top from Lowe's (in the closet storage aisle, some orange electrical tape (to go with my playroom's orange and turquoise theme), a pack of double sided permanent tape squares, and a few small bins to put inside the drawers. The whole thing cost about $40 and OMG I am in LOVE!

I added orange electrical tape to the drawers and table top edges to pretty it up some!

I attached the table top to the bins with the double sided permanent tape squares
(mini bins for people and odd pieces)

sorted by color

in the larger bins I added smaller bins so that I can have 2 colors in one drawer

without the chair my hubby made :)

I really LOVE how it turned out! Anthony has a place to build, he can keep his finished projects on top of the table, and the drawers have all the pieces sorted. I also put all the instruction books in page protectors inside a 3 ring binder so they are all in one place for when we want to build one of the sets...

book binder

Honestly, I want to make another one for Miss Madison and the endless amount of art supplies that are consuming my house! So, what do you all think?

I totally LOVE this idea! Fantastic. I have a ton of Lego I am trying to get motivated to sort as well. Also, that picture at the bottom of the page? Totally cracked me up!

I drooled when I saw the Family Fun lego storage picture. Yours looks great! Way to get it on and off your to-do list quickly. Maybe I'll be motivated this weekend.

I saw this in Family Fun and loved it too! I just haven't found a good deal for the rolling carts yet. Yours looks so organized and fabulous!

The orange electrical tape is brilliant! I love the shot of color.

And storing the instruction booklets in the binder is such a great idea. They can get torn and shredded fairly quickly. LEGO does offer online pdf documents but they can be quite hard to read.

You did a beautiful job and sounds like you got really good deals on materials, too! We just put together our own version of the Family Fun set-up and got some inspiration from this post as well. We are using the binder for instruction booklets the way you demonstrated - our son is not careful with them if they are out and about.

I hope you don't mind I linked to you in my post: http://anappleformom.com/2011/11/lego-desk-a-school-tool-and-storage-solution/

Just found your post through pinterest. I was planning on doing the one in Family Fun magazine, but yours looks easier and better. Great idea with the closet board. My son is so excited to get this, his collection has far outgrown the lego table he has.

Where did you buy your drawer carts? I can only find the 3 drawer ones.

Thanks everyone! I bought the storage bins at Target :)

We decided to do something similar for our son's big santa gift. Did you get the smaller storage bins that are inside the drawers at target too? We're having problems finding ones that are cost efficient and don't have holes in the side of the bin.

I did get the small bins at target. I lucked out, they were on clearance for $1.00. I would check out the dollar spot or maybe dollar tree and see if they have any small bins...

Just to update, they play with this all the time and all of the legos are still sorted and neat! SCORE!!

Where can I find permanent double stick squares?

I found them at Target in the aisle with the comand strips :) They were larger then I wanted so I cut them in half! Hope that helps!

Where did you find the containers you are using? They seem so perfect and seem to be the key component to your project.

Thank you so much for your creativity. My son's birthday is this week and this was the perfect gift for him...and sanity for mom. GREAT JOB on the details of purchasing as well!

I thought I would update anyone interested in pricing that I was able to find as of June 1, 2012. I looked for good deals everywhere and wanted to share new pricing for most people:

- Desk top $10 Home Improvement Store
- Scotch Mounting Tape $10 Walmart (2 packages)
- Electrical Tape $4 Home Depot (could not find colored anywhere else!)
- 2 Storage Cabinets $36 Target clearance (more than I wanted to spend)
- Small storage bins and containers $10 Staples on front $1 deals area (these were the hardest to find for the size!)
TOTAL $70.

Just wanted everyone to know before starting project of cost. Totally worth it in my opinion, but thought others might appreciate numbers. Thanks again for your blog, greatly appreciated!!!!
